Tips for Babies and Toddlers Starting Crèche or Playschool: How to Prepare for the Big Day

This month marks a big occasion in our lives, our youngest has just started in childcare.  I have been filled with mixed emotions about it. Its bittersweet to think he will no longer be at home with me in the mornings but also, I am looking forward to those few hours of child free time to work on Snugabugz.

Starting crèche or childcare is a big milestone for both you and your little one. Whether they’re attending full-time or just a few mornings a week, this transition can bring a mix of excitement and nerves. To help you prepare, we’ve put together some useful tips to make the process smoother for both you and your baby.

  1. Start with Short Separation Practice

Before the big day, it’s helpful to practice short periods of separation from your baby. This could mean leaving them with a trusted family member or friend for an hour or two. Gradually increase the time apart to help your baby get used to being away from you. These mini-trial runs will make the transition to crèche less overwhelming and help your baby understand that you will always come back.

  1. Create a Comforting Routine

Babies thrive on routine, and having a comforting daily schedule can ease the anxiety of a new environment. In the days leading up to crèche, try to establish a consistent morning routine that includes dressing, breakfast, and a special goodbye ritual. This helps signal to your baby that everything is okay and that they will see you again soon.

  1. Label Everything

With so many little ones around, things can easily get mixed up. Label all your baby’s belongings, from bottles to clothes to coats. This makes it easier for crèche staff to keep track of your baby’s items and prevents any mix-ups at home time. We use the mynametags.ie labels on all our bits.

  1. Pack Comfort Items

If the crèche allows, send your baby with a lovie or comfort item, like a favourite teddy, blanket, or even a special book they love. Having something familiar with them can make the unfamiliar crèche environment feel a bit more like home, providing them with a sense of security throughout the day. My daughters lovie was my hair, she would hold onto it while falling asleep so we had to give her hair extensions washed in my shampoo but that’s a whole other story!

  1. Dress Them for Success with Snugabugz Booties

Outdoor play is an important part of the crèche or playschool experience, allowing babies to explore, develop motor skills, and enjoy fresh air. However, keeping your little one’s feet warm, secure, and protected during outdoor activities can be tricky, especially as baby socks and shoes often fall off.

Our Snugabugz stay-on booties are perfect for outdoor playtime at crèche. With non-slip soles, they provide the grip and stability your baby needs to safely explore the crèche garden or outdoor play area. Made from GOTS-certified organic cotton and designed with an adjustable 3-snap closure, our booties stay securely on, no matter how active your baby gets. Plus, they’re super easy for crèche staff to slip on and off, ensuring your baby is ready for any adventure. You can find them here: https://snugabugz.com/collections/all

  1. Ensure Nap Time Comfort

If your baby has a specific sleep routine, it can be helpful to share that with the crèche staff. Whether they need a quiet, dark room, a sleep sack, or a soother to settle down, make sure the caregivers are aware of any preferences. This will make nap time easier and ensure your little one gets the rest they need to stay energized for the day.

  1. Stay Positive and Calm

Babies are highly intuitive and can pick up on your emotions. If you’re feeling anxious about the transition to crèche, your baby is likely to feel it too. Try to remain positive and upbeat when dropping them off. A confident goodbye and a big smile can reassure your baby that crèche is a safe and fun place. The first few weeks are always the hardest but it does get easier.

  1. Communicate with the Crèche Staff

Establishing good communication with the crèche staff is essential. Feel free to ask questions, share any concerns, and provide updates about your baby’s habits or routines. The more they know about your baby, the better they can care for them. Be open to receiving feedback as well, as it can help you both work together to make the transition smooth for your child.

Starting crèche or playschool is a big step for your baby, but with a few thoughtful preparations, you can make this transition easier for both of you. Remember to pack essentials like comfort items and keep your little one’s feet safe and warm with Snugabugz stay-on booties during outdoor play. Soon enough, your baby will be excited to explore their new environment, and you’ll feel confident knowing they’re prepared for every part of the day.
